How to choose a live online course: a checklist for Indian learners

A course can look appealing and still be a poor fit for your starting level or weekly routine. Before comparing certificates or discounts, decide what you want to be able to do. Use the questions below during a demo or course guidance call, and write down the answers so you can compare options fairly.
Start with one outcome you can demonstrate
Replace a broad goal such as “learn AI” with a small, observable task: build a Python program, explain a project in English, or draft a marketing plan for a local business. Your first outcome should be something you can practise and show to another person.
Next, describe your starting point honestly. Have you written code before? Are you comfortable using a laptop and managing files? Can you explain your work aloud? Share these details with the teacher so the recommended course starts at an appropriate level.
Compare the syllabus with the work you will actually do
A long topic list is useful only when you understand how you will practise it. Ask to see an example exercise and what a completed submission might contain. Find out whether the teacher reviews your work individually and whether you can resubmit after feedback.
- Identify the prerequisites, including any software or device you will need.
- Ask what you should be able to complete after the first few lessons.
- Check whether projects are guided demonstrations or assignments you build yourself.
- Ask how doubts are handled between classes and who responds.
Check the schedule against a normal week
Ask for class days, times in IST, session length and expected practice time. Put both classes and independent practice into your calendar. A schedule that works only during an unusually quiet week is unlikely to be sustainable.
Ask what happens if you miss a class, whether recordings are available for that particular batch, and how long access lasts. Do not assume every course has the same catch-up arrangement. If a start date is not published, ask the team to confirm availability before paying.
Make the full cost and terms clear
Record the total fee, any instalment arrangement, and costs for software, exams or tools. Ask what learner access includes and when it ends. Read the cancellation and refund policy before committing.
Keep a copy of the course details and any agreement shared with you. If a claim about placements, income or certification matters to your decision, ask for the exact conditions and supporting evidence. A learning plan should be useful even without a promised job outcome.
Use the demo to assess fit
Bring a question you have already tried to solve. Notice whether the teacher asks about your level, explains the reasoning and lets you attempt something yourself. After the demo, write down what became clearer and what still needs answering.
